Young Hunter Hosts a Seminar for Christchurch's Chinese Community
Young Hunter Lawyers, together with the Christchurch Zhonghua Chinese Society, recently hosted a free legal seminar in Christchurch on Wills, Trusts and Enduring Powers of Attorney, drawing more than 100 members of the local Chinese community. The seminar aimed to help attendees better understand and navigate key areas of New Zealand law relating to asset protection, estate planning and future decision-making.
Who Presented the Seminar?
The seminar was presented by Sunny (Liping) Qin, Senior Associate at Young Hunter Lawyers. Drawing on New Zealand's legal framework and practical case examples, Sunny guided attendees through the essentials of establishing Trusts, preparing Wills and setting up Enduring Powers of Attorney, as well as how these legal tools can assist with protecting assets, managing personal affairs and planning for the future.
What Topics Were Covered?
The seminar addressed several core areas of estate and asset planning law, including:
Wills — how to prepare a valid Will under New Zealand law;
Trusts — how trusts can be used to protect and manage assets;
Enduring Powers of Attorney (EPAs) — how EPAs allow a trusted person to make decisions on your behalf if you're unable to; and
New Zealand vs. Chinese legal systems — a comparison of relevant legal concepts and legal culture between the two jurisdictions, helping attendees understand how New Zealand law applies in practice.
What Questions Did Attendees Ask?
The seminar closed with an interactive Q&A session, where attendees raised a range of practical questions, including:
family asset planning;
cross-border inheritance matters;
Trust administration; and
the practical use of Enduring Powers of Attorney.
The discussion reflected strong interest across the community in understanding how these legal tools may apply to individual and family circumstances.
Why Does This Matter for the Chinese Community in New Zealand?
Attendees noted that the seminar addressed practical concerns commonly faced by members of the Chinese community in New Zealand, helping strengthen awareness of local legal mechanisms and how they may be used to protect personal and family interests.
For families navigating New Zealand law for the first time, understanding the differences between New Zealand and Chinese legal systems can be an important part of effective estate and asset planning.
What's Next?
This event forms part of the Christchurch Zhonghua Chinese Society's ongoing community legal education initiative. Young Hunter Lawyers looks forward to continuing to support community education initiatives on legal, social and community topics relevant to local residents, helping promote legal awareness and community engagement.
